  • Baking Dish
  • Measuring Cups
  • Wooden Spoon:
  • Small Skillet

Ingredients

  • 4 cups crumbled cornbread
  • 2 cups crumbled white bread
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Prepare Your Bread

  • Crumble the cornbread and white bread into a large bowl. Make sure the pieces are small and uniform in size.

Sauté the Vegetables

  • Cook the onions and celery in butter until very soft. Do not brown them, just let them become clear and fragrant.

Mix the Seasonings

  • Add the sage and poultry seasoning to the bread crumbs. Toss them well so the spices cover every piece of bread.

Add the Liquid

  • Slowly pour the chicken broth over the dry bread mixture. Stir gently until the bread is wet but not like soup.

Transfer and Bake

  • Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and level. Bake at 350 degrees until the top is firm and golden.

Notes

➜ Use day-old bread to prevent the dressing from getting mushy.
➜ Sauté vegetables in real butter for the most authentic flavor.
➜ Add the broth slowly to reach your preferred moisture level.
➜ Do not overmix the batter or it will become tough.
➜ Let the dressing rest for ten minutes before you serve.
➜ Season with extra black pepper for a little Texas heat.
