Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound dry pinto beans
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 6 cups of water
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
 

Clean the Beans

  • Look for small rocks in the dry beans. Wash them well under cold running water.

Soak the Beans

  • Put beans in a pot with water. Let them sit for at least eight hours.

Drain and Rinse

  • Pour out the old soaking water. Rinse the beans one more time very well.

Start the Pot

  • Add beans and ham hock to the pot. Cover them with fresh clean water.

Boil and Simmer

  • Bring the water to a big boil. Turn heat down to a low simmer.

Add the Seasoning

  • Put salt, sugar, and pepper into the pot. Stir the beans very gently with a spoon.

Cook Until Soft

  • Keep the lid on the pot. Cook until the beans are very tender.
