Equipment

  • Medium Saucepan
  • Fine Mesh Strainer
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Wooden Spoon:
  • Fork

Ingredients

  • 2 cups long grain white rice
  • 4 cups vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Rinse the Rice Well

  • Start by washing your dry white rice. Put it in a mesh strainer. Run cold water over the rice grains. Move the rice with your clean fingers. Keep washing until the water is clear. This step removes the extra surface starch. It prevents the rice from getting gummy. Your rice will be very light and fluffy.

Melt the Butter

  • Place your saucepan on the stove. Turn the heat to medium. Add the butter to the warm pan. Let it melt until it starts to bubble. Do not let the butter turn brown. The butter adds a creamy taste. It coats every grain of rice perfectly. This creates a very rich mouthfeel.

Toast the Grains

  • Add the rinsed rice to the melted butter. Stir it well with your wooden spoon. Cook the rice for two minutes. The grains should look slightly toasted. This adds a nutty flavor to the dish. It also helps the rice stay firm. Stirring often prevents the rice from burning.

Add the Savory Spices

  • Now you can add your dry seasonings. Sprinkle in the cumin and garlic powder. Add the onion powder and chili powder. Do not forget the salt and turmeric. Stir the rice to coat it in spices. The rice will turn a beautiful yellow color. The smell will be very wonderful.

Pour in the Broth

  • Carefully pour the vegetable broth into the pan. You can use chicken broth if you prefer. Stir everything one last time. Turn the heat up to high. Wait for the liquid to reach a boil. Bubbles should cover the whole surface. This ensures even cooking for the rice.

Simmer the Rice

  • Turn the heat down to very low. Place the lid on the saucepan. Make sure the lid fits very tight. Do not lift the lid yet. Let the rice simmer for fifteen minutes. The rice will absorb all the flavorful liquid. The steam does all the hard work.

Rest and Fluff

  • Remove the pan from the hot burner. Keep the lid on the pan. Let it sit for five minutes. This lets the moisture distribute evenly. After five minutes, take the lid off. Use a fork to fluff the grains. Your seasoned rice is now ready to serve.
